Principles For Architectural Design

According to a renowned designer, “there are no rules” when it comes to interior design. However, everyone can use a few tips and tricks. If you are perfect with architectural design, you are good at almost everything. Check out these simple design principles that are essential for designing.

Plan For Real Life

In the interior design process, space planning is first. According to the American Institute of Architects, space planning includes blocking out interior spatial areas, defining circulation patterns, and developing plans for furniture layout and equipment placement.

Every interior design project should begin with an assessment of a room’s functional deficiencies and how the elements can be manipulated to better fit the people who live there.

Vision

Once the designers have an idea of how space should function, they mesh those requirements with the client’s desired aesthetic and atmosphere, to create a concept for space.

It is important to take a global approach when it comes to interior designing and picking of sofas. It’s really about creating a vision. There’s a timelessness and longevity [to the interior] when you can implement that vision that’s been well thought out.

You have to be able to tell a story about how the interior is going to come together with all the different elements and pieces.

Mix The Shapes

Most living rooms will have a lot of rectangles and squares – it’s simply the nature of those bigger furniture items such as sofas, sideboards and shelving units. If you notice that your space has lots of lines and right angles, think about adding some circles. A round coffee table, a pair of round side tables, a round rug, round wall hanging – the options are endless.

View Room From A Distance

Can’t put your finger on exactly what your room needs? Step back and see the room as a whole. As interior designers know, viewing a room from a distance often makes it easy to see what needs to be replaced, added or removed; whether it’s the empty wall that needs to be filled, the wall that needs color or the corner that’s crying out for a tall plant.

Include Negative Space

If you’re big on color, make sure you include some spots to rest the eye. Aim to include some empty space in a room, or balance your brights out with plenty of neutrals. Here, the owners have used white-washed walls to balance out all the brights.

Hangings

A beautiful painting or artwork will look far better when hung at the right height. Also, having a consistent center line throughout your home helps create a sense of harmony.

As a general rule, the center of the artwork should be at eye level, which for the average person is 145 centimeters from the floor. Remember, that’s 145 centimeters to the center of the art, not to the hook. Yep, I’ve made that mistake before.

Mirrors Are Indeed Magical

You don’t need a wand, you need a mirror! Not only do they add light and depth to a room, but they can reflect views, visually expand a space, be the hero piece of a room… plus, of course, they’re practical too.

A mirror is a great investment and one that will make a huge difference to the look and feel of your space.

Architectural design is something that has to be perfect. This article has shown you some important principles involved in this design.
